Description

Tulip- Queensday (Bulb)

Tulipa hybrida

Synonyms: Tulipa gesneriana

NOT FOR TAS, WA

  • Peony-style double flowers
  • Vibrant orange with gold and green accents
  • Late season flowering

Double peony-style flowers in a vibrant orange accented with gold and green. Named to celebrate the orange costumes worn on Queens Day (Koninginnedag) in the Netherlands, the flowers provide a pop of colour in beds, borders or pots.

Double tulips have large, multilayered flowers that unfurl gradually and hold well on the stem. They are suited to garden beds or pots and their strong stems and long vase life make them a good choice for cut flowers. For the best display plant in groups or drifts.

Quick Planting Guide
Method Sow direct
Sowing Depth 15-20cm
Season Autumn
Hardiness / Life Cycle Frost Hardy Perennial
Plant Spacing 20cm
Plant Height 45cm
Position Full or part sun, moist well drained soil
Days Until Maturity 60-90 days

How To Grow

  1. In areas without winter frosts, place bulbs in the crisper of a fridge for 4-8 weeks prior to planting. Do not place next to fruit and vegetables.
  2. Choose a location in full or part sun with well draining soil.
  3. Dig over soil to a depth of 20cm and enrich with compost and well-rotted manure.
  4. Plant bulbs three times as deep as the bulb's height with the pointed tips facing upwards.
  5. Keep soil moist but not wet until shoots emerge.
  6. After flowering, leave foliage to die down naturally.
  7. Once foliage dies down cut it off at ground level.
  8. In cool climates bulbs can remain in the ground for several years without the need to lift and divide them. In areas without winter frosts treat bulbs as annuals or lift and store them in a cool, dry place after foliage dies down.
