Description

Asparagus- Mary Washington (Crown)

Asparagus officinalus

NOT TO NT, TAS, WA

  • Crown will establish quickly
  • Long lived perennial
  • Rust-resistant heirloom variety

Not many vegetables will produce crops for 20 years but Asparagus certainly will. This long lived perennial will keep your table full of delicious spears for years to come.

Asparagus 'Mary Washington' is an heirloom variety that is rust-resistant and produces strong straight spears with a purple/green tip.

An asparagus crown is the year-old roots and rhizomes of the plant that is dug up and sold bare-rooted (without soil). Crowns will give you a head start when establishing asparagus, meaning that you can begin harvesting spears at least a year earlier.

To plant, dig a 30cm deep hole in rich well-composted soil and make a mound in the centre. Place the crown on the mound and spread the roots out evenly. Cover with soil, making sure the centre of the crown is just below the surface of the soil. Do not harvest for the first year to let plants establish and ensure thick strong stems for years to come.

  5. Place the crown on the mound and spread the roots out evenly.
  6. Cover with soil, making sure the centre of the crown is just below the surface.
  7. Do not harvest for the first year to let plants establish.
  8. Harvest tender spears in spring, cutting them just below the surface of the soil, and leave remaining foliage to grow during summer.
