Perennial tropical climbing vine (grown as an annual in cool climates) to 200cm. Popular in Asia this pea is grown for its bright blue flowers which have a history of medicinal uses. Flowers can be consumed fresh, dried, or powdered. Commonly used fresh in hot water to make a blue coloured tea. Can be used as a natural food colouring for blue rice or to colour deserts or cocktails. Colour changes colour with pH, add lemon juice and it turns blue to pink. Leaves are a popular stock food. Can be used as a nitrogen fixing cover-crop. Also known as "Asian pigeonwings" or "Darwin Pea".
