Description

Solanum laciniatum
- Perennial shrub to 3m
- Edible berries can be eaten raw or cooked
- Fast growing
A fast-growing perennial shrub to 3m tall and 3m wide with succulent stems and large deeply lobed green leaves said to resemble kangaroo paws. Six petalled deep purple flowers bloom in clusters of 3 to 5 in spring and summer, followed by edible egg-shaped berries, 2-3cm long. The berries turn from green or yellow to bright orange when ripe and can be eaten raw or cooked. The flavour is a combination of bitter and sweet.
Note: unripe berries are toxic and should not be eaten.
As well as a food source, indigenous people used the fruit in a poultice to treat swollen joints. Also makes a good fast-growing screening plant. Attracts birds.
Native to southern Australia including Tasmania and southern NSW, Victoria and South Australia, and also New Zealand. Also known as 'Meaketch', 'Cut-leaf Kangaroo Apple' and 'Southern Kangaroo Apple'.
Note: Seeds of many native plants are dormant and will not germinate until ideal environmental conditions are met. Follow instructions for pre-treatment and sowing, and be patient; some wild harvested seeds can take much longer to germinate than expected.
