'Mountain Currant' seeds
Coprosma nitida
- Perennial shrub to 2m
- Edible berries in summer and autumn
- Ripe berries are sweet and slightly astringent
An evergreen shrub growing 1-2m high and 1.5m wide with small glossy green leaves, stiff branches and occasional prickles. Plants produce small green flowers in spring followed by orange to red berry-like edible fruits up to 1cm wide in summer and autumn. Fruits are sweet and slightly astringent when ripe and are best eaten stewed. Seed can be roasted as a coffee substitute. Bird attracting.
Suited to native or bush food gardens, particularly in cold climates. Native to NSW, Victoria and Tasmania in subalpine climates. Also known as 'Prickly Currant' and 'Shining Coprosma'.
Note: Seeds of many native plants are dormant and will not germinate until ideal environmental conditions are met. Follow instructions for pre-treatment and sowing, and be patient; some wild harvested seeds can take much longer to germinate than expected.
