Description

Walking Onion (Bulb)

Allium x proliferum

NOT FOR TAS, WA

  • Biennial to 60cm
  • Easy to grow
  • Edible leaves, bulbils and bulbs

A easy to grow, clump-forming biennial growing to 60cm tall with long hollow leaves resembling a bunching onion. As plants mature miniature bulbs called bulbils form at the top of the flower stems. If left on the plant the stems will arch over and the bulbils will form roots where they touch the ground, making plants appear to 'walk' across the garden over time. At maturity the plants produce bulbs approximately 4cm across at the base of the stems, with 6 to 10 bulbs produced per stem.

The leaves, bulbils and bulbs are all edible and have a mild onion flavour. Bulbs can be used as a substitute for brown onions, the leaves in a similar way to bunching onions, and the bulbils can be cooked or pickled. Also known as tree onions, topsetting onions or Egyptian onions.

How To Grow

  1. Choose a location in full sun with well draining soil.
  2. Dig over soil; for best results, dig in well rotted manure.
  3. Space rows 40cm apart.
  4. Plant bulbs 40cm apart with the pointed tips facing upwards.
  5. Plant 5-8cm deep so the tips are just visible above the soil.
  6. Keep well watered during warm weather.
  7. Green leaves can be harvested at any time.
  8. Bulbils can be harvested when they are 1.5-3cm across and before they form a green shoot. Alternatively, leave the bulbils on the flower stems and they will form new plants when the stem arches over and touches the ground.
  9. Bulbs can be harvested when the leaves start to look brown and dried. Dig them with a garden fork and shake off any excess soil.
  10. Cure bulbs in a shady, well-ventilated area for 2-3 weeks before cutting the dried leaves off 3-4cm above the bulb.
  11. Store bulbs in a cool, dry place.
