Description

Blackberry- Thornless (Cane)

Rubus x hybrid

Synonyms: Rubus ulmifolius

NOT FOR TAS, WA

  • Long, nearly thornless canes
  • Glossy sweet fruit
  • Harvest December to March

Perennial fruit with long, nearly thornless canes producing large, glossy black berries from December to March. Vigorous and high yielding. The sweet fruit can be eaten fresh or used in pies, crumbles, drinks and preserves. Suitable for growing in all climates with a cold winter.

Blackberries produce fruit on two-year-old canes (called floricanes).

Thornless blackberries are complex hybrids derived from several different Rubus species; unlike European blackberries, they are not recorded as weeds in Australia.

Berry canes are the roots and stems of the plant that are grown for a year then pruned to a single stem, dug up and sold bare-rooted (without soil). Canes will grow vigorously in the first year after planting.

A photo showing packaged berry canes. One bag has one blackberry cane and one bag has three raspberry canes. The canes are packaged in plastic bags and potting mix with a label with basic planting instructions.
