Description
'Chocolate Lily' seeds
Arthropodium strictum
Synonyms: Dichopogon strictus
- Grassy perennial to 50cm
- Chocolate scented flowers
- Edible flowers and tubers
Grassy perennial growing to 50cm tall with narrow, flat leaves and deep mauve to pink six-petalled flowers with prominent purple anthers arranged along an upright flower stalk. The flowers are chocolate scented, sometimes with a hint of vanilla, attract bees and other pollinators and bloom from September to January.
Suitable to grow in pots or rockeries, to fill gaps in garden beds or to mass plant. Indigenous people ate the tubers that grow at the end of the roots. The tubers grow up to 5cm long and can be harvested when the plant is in flower, and have been eaten raw or cooked.
Native to grassland and woodlands in all states except the Northern Territory. Also known as 'Nodding Chocolate Lily' and 'Gitjawil matom' (Dja Dja Wurrung).
Note: Seeds of many native plants are dormant and will not germinate until ideal environmental conditions are met. Follow instructions for pre-treatment and sowing, and be patient; some wild harvested seeds can take much longer to germinate than expected.
