We are coming to the end of summer which means our annuals are about ready to go to seed, if they haven't started already. Cosmos are prolific flowers and produce a large amount of seeds, which are great for saving to sow next season. There are a few stages Cosmos go through from first bloom to then harvesting the seed.

Identifying the Stages

1. Petals
Once the petals have started to die back, you will be left with a green, closed bud.

2. The Bud
The green bud will then start to dry out. You will notice the dark, charcoal seeds will start to fan out and the plant will still be green.

3. What to look for
Depending on your climate and conditions, roughly a week or so after you see the seeds emerging, you will notice the green bud has turned brown and you will then be left with only the dried seeds, in a formation that resembles the spikes of an Echidna.

4. How to know when it's ready
You will know when they are ready to collect, as the seeds will fall off with a gentle swipe of your hand.

Tips for Maximising your Seed Collection

Label: Always label & date a brown paper bag before collecting and stick with one variety at a time.

Drying: Lay the seeds out flat on some paper towel or fine mesh, indoors for 3-7 days to ensure they're completely dry.

Storage: Place them in a paper envelope or a glass jar. Keep them in a cool, dark and dry spot.

Longevity: If you're wanting your seeds to store longer, make sure they're completely dry and you can freeze them in an airtight container.

Quality Control: If you see seeds that are pale, paper-thin, or feel hollow - they likely weren't pollinated. Keep only the plump seeds.

More Seed: Deadheading encourages the plant to keep flowering, however if you'd like to start saving your seeds, you have to stop deadheading toward the end of the season to allow the plant to complete its life cycle.
