An Itoh peony with large, semi-double, flat white flowers. Flowers open with a pink blush to the petals which fades to white when fully open. Petals have a magenta flare near the centre. This peony has a slight fragrance. Plants grow 60-90cm tall. Flowers open mid to late-season.
Itoh peonies are intersectional peonies (a cross between an herbaceous peony and a tree peony), but specifically have Paeonia lactiflora as one parent and a tree peony as the other parent. Itoh cultivars have strong hybrid vigour and, while being deciduous, will hold their leaves late into autumn before dying down in winter. They will form a new leafy clump in spring. Most cultivars will also have one main bud and three side buds that open in succession, which provides a longer flowering period over 3-4 weeks. The large, opulent flowers, resembling fully-open roses, last well as cut flowers. Young plants take 2-3 years, depending on growing conditions, to fully establish their roots. During this time, they may only put up one or a few flowers, but once established, plants will flower prolifically and will continue to do so for many years. Although peonies generally grow and flower best in cooler regions that have cold winters, Itoh peonies are more likely to flower better in warmer, and more temperate, climates compared to herbaceous peonies.
Itoh (Intersectional) peonies grow from a tuberous root, which is a modified root that acts as a storage organ for the following season's growth. They are thick and fleshy, and crown tissue near the end that was attached to the old plant produces buds that develop into stems and leaves. The other end of the root produces new roots which absorb nutrients and anchors the plant in the soil. Plants with tuberous roots can be propagated by division of the roots, ensuring that each piece has some crown tissue.
