Description

'Raspberry Jam Wattle' seeds

Acacia acuminata

  • Fast-growing shrub or small tree
  • Cut wood smells like raspberry jam
  • Fluffy yellow flowers in spring

A fast-growing tall shrub or small tree to 5m, named for the aroma of its cut wood which resembles raspberry jam. The narrow leaves (phyllodes) are 10cm long, and in spring the tree is covered in cylindrical fluffy yellow flowers which are followed by flattened seed pods. Makes a good feature tree or privacy screen in a native garden, and is a companion or host plant to Quandong.

Indigenous uses of this tree include grinding the seeds into flour; using the orange-coloured resin in tea; and using the hardwood to make tools. The hardwood is popular with woodworkers because of its sweet aroma. Native to the southwest and wheatbelt areas of Western Australia. Also known as 'Jam Tree' or 'Raspberry Jam Tree' or by its indigenous (Noongar) names 'Manjart', 'Munertor', 'Mungeitch' and 'Mungat'.

Note: Seeds of many native plants are dormant and will not germinate until ideal environmental conditions are met. Follow instructions for pre-treatment and sowing, and be patient; some wild harvested seeds can take much longer to germinate than expected.
