Description

Rhubarb- Ever Red (Crown)

Rhuem x hybridum

Synonyms: Rhuem rhabarbarum

NOT FOR NT, TAS, WA

  • Perennial to 100cm
  • Deep red skinned stalks
  • Highly productive

A highly productive perennial growing to 100cm with tall, deep red skinned stalks growing from the crown (or rhizome) at the base of the plant. An evergreen variety that produces year-round, with best harvests in spring and summer. One of the sweetest rhubarb varieties with a typical bittersweet tang, perfect to use in pies, desserts and jams. Suitable to grow in large containers.

The large green palmate leaves contain oxalic acid and should not be eaten by humans or animals. They can be used to make a garden insecticide.

A rhubarb crown is a rhizome (or underground runner) from a parent plant that establishes to form a new plant. The rhizome is then dug up and sold bare-rooted (without soil or leaves). Crowns will give you a head start when establishing a rhubarb plant compared to growing from seed.

How To Grow

Plant soon after delivery.
HOW TO GROW: (1) Choose a location in full or part sun with well draining soil. (2) Dig over soil and enrich with compost or well-rotted manure. (3) Space crowns 50cm apart. (4) Dig a 20cm deep hole and make a mound in the centre. (5) Place the crown on the mound so the growing point is level with the surface of the soil. (6) Cover with soil, making sure the tip of the crown is not covered. (7) For stronger plants, do not harvest for the first year to let plants establish. (8) Harvest outer stalks by twisting them off the plant at the base, leaving at least three inner stalks for future growth.
