'Western Australian Christmas Tree' seeds

Nuytsia floribunda

  • Large tree growing to 10m
  • Vivid orange flowers in December
  • Bird attracting

A large upright  tree growing to 10m high and 3m wide with long needle-like green leaves. In December the tree is smothered in clusters of vivid orange flowers. Flowers are nectar rich and attract birds.

A member of the mistletoe family, Western Australian Christmas Tree is a semi-parasitic plant that often uses the root systems of a host plant to access water and nutrients. Suitable host species include acacias (wattles), eucalypts or other perennial native grasses, shrubs and trees.

Native to southwestern Western Australia. Significant to the Noongar people, the trees were thought to house spirits of recently deceased people and were considered sacred. Indigenous people also ate the roots and gum that oozes from the bark of the trees. Also known as 'Moojar'.

Note: Seeds of many native plants are dormant and will not germinate until ideal environmental conditions are met. Follow instructions for pre-treatment and sowing, and be patient; some wild harvested seeds can take much longer to germinate than expected.
