Winter Squash- Kakai
Cucurbita pepo
- Can be left to mature and used as a small pumpkin
- Compact vine
- African Heirloom variety
Compact vine with a semi-bushy habit. Produces small orange and green striped fruits. Grown for its edible hull-less seeds known as pepitas, this variety is one of the few winter squash varieties that don't produce a shell around the seed so seeds don't need to be shucked to be eaten. Seeds are great for salting & roasting and make a highly nutritious snack food. Whilst the fruit is edible roasted, it is flavourless with a watery texture. Also known as "hulless pumpkin".
