Hyacinth- Purple Star (Bulb)

Hyacinthus orientalis

  • Heirloom variety
  • Lilac flowers with a deep purple stripe
  • Strongly scented

An heirloom hyacinth with strongly fragrant flowers on a strong, upright flower spike. The flowers are lilac purple with a royal purple stripe in the centre of each petal.

Hyacinths bloom on upright stems with hundreds of highly perfumed flowers clustered on each stem. They flower early in spring and are suited to growing in pots where they can be enjoyed outdoors or brought inside once flowers begin to open. Hyacinths can be planted individually in small pots, grouped in containers for a more dramatic display, or planted at the front of a border or en masse in the garden.

How To Grow

  1. In areas without winter frosts, place bulbs in the crisper of a fridge for 4-8 weeks prior to planting. Do not place next to fruit and vegetables.
  2. Choose a location in full or part sun with well draining soil.
  3. Dig over soil to a depth of 20cm and enrich with compost and well-rotted manure.
  4. Plant bulbs three times as deep as the bulb's height with the pointed tips facing upwards.
  5. Keep soil moist but not wet until shoots emerge.
  6. After flowering, leave foliage to die down naturally.
  7. Once foliage dies down cut it off at ground level.
  8. In cool climates bulbs can remain in the ground for several years without the need to lift and divide them. In areas without winter frosts treat bulbs as annuals or lift and store them in a cool, dry place after foliage dies down.

TO GROW IN POTS: Place pot in a shaded position after planting and water weekly until shoots are 5-10cm tall, then move pot into a sunny place to encourage flowers to open. Pots can be brought indoors once flowers open. Bulbs grown in pots can be treated as annuals or lifted and planted in the garden in their second year.
