Description

Strawberry- Red Gauntlet (Runner x5)

Fragaria x ananassa

NOT TO TAS, WA

  • Very productive
  • Large fruit
  • Suited to cool climates

A popular, very productive variety with white flowers and medium to large bright red fruit. The aromatic fruit is firm with pink flesh and a sweet flavour with a hint of tartness. Plants are resistant to fungal diseases.

This variety produces fruit throughout summer in cool climates. It originated in Scotland and has been grown commercially in the southern states of Australia for decades.

A strawberry runner is an offshoot (also called a 'stolon') from a parent plant that establishes and forms a new plant. The runner is then dug up and sold bare-rooted (without soil or leaves). Runners will give you a head start when establishing a strawberry patch, meaning that you can begin harvesting fruit earlier than if growing plants by seed.

Strawberry- Red Gauntlet (Runner x5)

Fabulous big fat strawberries. The Red Gauntlet stood out for me. I did buy about 5 different varieties & ended up with about 200 new plants. I'm delighted with my strawberry patch. Fresh strawberries every day. I even made strawberry & rhubarb jam. I had to cover the whole patch with bird friendly netting. After picking strawberries I'd leave the net off for 2 or 3 days so the bees could pollinate flowers. Everyone should grow strawberries, they taste so much better. I gave my sister some of my strawberry runners & she has hers in big pots. If they needed watering I did it early morning on warm days so the plants could dry out. Highly recommend you grow strawberries. Langwarrin VIC. Feb 2024.
