Description

'Strawberry Tree' seeds

Arbutus unedo

  • Evergreen tree to 7m
  • Edible fruit
  • Ornamental bark and flowers

An evergreen shrub or small tree growing to 7m with a rounded canopy. Plants have dark green leaves, ornamental stringy cinnamon coloured bark and clusters of dainty white bell-shaped flowers in autumn and winter. Flowers are followed by edible soft fruit, which turns from green to orange and then bright red when ripe and measures 2cm across. Fruit can take up to a year to ripen on the tree.

The fruit can be eaten raw but is more commonly used to make jams, jellies and sauces due to its mealy texture. The flavour is sweet-tart and tropical, with hints of mango, apricot, peach and guava. In Portugal, the fruit is used to make a traditional liqueur called 'medronho'. Plants are suitable to use as small feature trees and in mixed hedges and borders.

Native to the Mediterranean and later introduced to Ireland; suited to temperate and cold climates. Also known as 'Irish Strawberry Tree', 'Killarney Strawberry Tree', 'Cane Apple' and 'Dalmation Strawberry'.

Note: Strawberry Tree is considered invasive in some council areas of Australia; check before planting.
