Chamaecytisus palmensis

Synonyms: Cystisus proliferous

  • Evergreen small tree
  • Fixes nitrogen in the soil
  • Flowers attract bees

Evergreen small tree from the Canary Islands, growing to 5m but often pruned to 1-2m. Trees have a weeping habit, with 7cm long grey-green leaves divided into 3 leaflets. In late winter and spring scented white pea-like flowers that attract bees are followed by flat seed pods. Used in permaculture as a fast-growing nitrogen fixer for soil improvement, and as a wind break or fodder plant in dry climates; trees have long tap roots that help access water deep in the soil. Can be grown for shade and fodder for chickens, as a hedge, or as a graceful shade tree in large gardens. Also known as 'Tree Lucerne'.

Ratings & Reviews

I was hopeful of half hardy… but really this plant does to tolerate anything but the mildest frosts when small. Consider this when planting out tubestock into paddock conditions. I’d grown on 100 or so plants to about 30cm high that all went toes up after succession of frosts.
