Did you know that bath Loofahs don't actually come from the sea? They grow on vines! The Luffa Plant, aka the "Sponge Gourd" is a wonderful and rewarding addition to any garden, offering the incredible bonus of harvesting your very own sustainable sponges! Processing them at home is a fun and easy project once you know exactly what to look for.

Watch our step-by-step video guide on harvesting and processing a Luffa.

How To Make Your Own Luffa Sponge:

1. Knowing When To Harvest

It is important to know exactly when to harvest your Luffa for sponge making. If you pick them off their vine too early, they can be incredibly difficult to process.

  • Green and Heavy: A dark green gourd still has a lot of flesh inside and will take a lot of effort to turn into a sponge.
  • Yellow to Brown: You want to wait until the vines have died back and the gourds have turned yellow to brown. They should feel very light, with almost no weight to them.
  • The Rattle Test: If you can shake the pod and hear the seeds rattle inside like a maraca, they are perfectly ready to harvest!

2. Peeling and Seed Collecting

Once your Luffa is fully dried out and rattling, it's time to reveal the sponge hiding inside.

  • Peeling: Gently squeeze the shell to crack it, and then simply peel the skin away. A well dried, brown Luffa will peel very easily and won't have much wet fibrous material left inside.
  • Collecting Seeds: Tap the end of the peeled Luffa to shake out the seeds. Each pod holds lots of seeds that you can save and sow the following spring!

3. Cleaning and Processing Your Luffa

Next, you need to give the sponge a good deep clean.

  • Washing: The easiest way to do this is to dunk and squeeze it in a bucket of soapy water, or you can use a garden hose. Keep washing and squeezing until there are no fleshy plant parts left.
  • Processing Greener Pods: If you peeled a luffa that was slightly yellow or green, it will likely still be wet and a bit fleshy. You can still turn it into a sponge, but it will just take a little more processing, cutting away of the flesh, and hosing out to remove the stubborn organic matter.

4. Drying and Using Your Sponge

Once your sponge is completely clean, simply hang it out on the washing line to dry in the sun. And there you have it! You have successfully processed a sustainable, compostable, homegrown sponge that is ready to be used in the shower or for your spring cleaning!
